Biography

This page describes background information about the artwork of Marshall Sharpe.

Marshall Sharpe, b. 1988, is an acrylic painter and 8th grade English teacher at Mililani Middle School in Hawaii.  After receiving a BA in Art from Elon University in 2010, Sharpe moved to Hawaii through the Teach for America program.  In 2012, he begun studying under Reem BassousEmily Mcilroyand Andrew Rose at the Honolulu Museum School  and the University of Hawaii.   He maintains a private painting studio at the Old Waialua Sugar Mill, where he is developing a series of new paintings based on endemic Hawaiian fish and coral bleaching.

Sharpe's work is known for its rich impasto texture, high-key, saturated color palette and his use of drips, palette-knife scrapes and unblended brush strokes to abstract the form.  In 2014, Sharpe's series of Hawaiian Monarchs was featured in the Huffington Post.  In 2016, his work was featured on the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).  His work has been shown at Arts West (Elon University), the Honolulu Museum of Art School, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce Commitment to Excellence Show, and the Haleiwa Art Festival.
