He received his BA in Studio Art from Elon University in 2010 and his MFA in Painting from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2020. Sharpe teaches painting and drawing courses at Bakersfield College in Southern California as an Associate Professor. His creative work focuses on ancestry, identity, and transience. He has exhibited his work in solo exhibitions at the New York City Phoenix Art Collective, UCSB’s Glassbox Gallery, and the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The work has also been included in invitational and juried exhibitions at the Art Design and Architecture Museum, CA, The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, the Woodbury Museum in Orem, Utah, California State University Long Beach, California State Channel Islands, Elon University, and the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Because Nancy died before I was born, I used paint to create a new narrative of a woman I never met. This body of work is my attempt to connect with her. The paintings are based on her journal entries, found family photographs, and interviews with family and friends. The color scheme was influenced by the black and white photos from that era, a reminisce. However, nostalgia can be problematic - although my grandmother lived a privileged life in the 1950s, Memphis was engulfed in turmoil around issues of race, injustice, and segregation. The work references the fluid shape of memory by allowing streams of liquid paint to flow across the surface of the paintings, both following and disrupting the contours of the forms. Memory dissolves. Valley University invited me to join them as an artist-in-residence at the Capitol Reef Field Station in Utah. One of the most stunning National Parks in the U.S. Along with ~25 students, we spent a week creating artwork: sculpture, photography, painting, land art. Many of the pieces, including 3 of three of these images were later published in the 2022 book, “Utopia: State of Abstraction.” These lumens were created by placing plant material from the natural environment on top of old sheets of black and white photo paper. The images were created by Colton, an imaginary, Christian, gay, teenage pastor’s son from the 1800s who never saw gay lovers. Our teacher, Kumu Ka`imipono Kaiwi, taught us that our mo`olelo consisted of the stories, traditions and practices of our ancestors, forming a link between the past and the present. With time, I uncovered the names of my ancestors going back ten generations. Along the way, I uncovered year-book photographs of my great-grandfather that my family had never before seen. He received his BA in Studio Art from Elon University in 2010 and his MFA in Painting from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2020. Sharpe teaches painting and drawing courses at Bakersfield College in Southern California as an Associate Professor. His creative work focuses on ancestry, identity, and transience. He has exhibited his work in solo exhibitions at the New York City Phoenix Art Collective, UCSB’s Glassbox Gallery, and the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The work has also been included in invitational and juried exhibitions at the Art Design and Architecture Museum, CA, The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, the Woodbury Museum in Orem, Utah, California State University Long Beach, California State Channel Islands, Elon University, and the Honolulu Museum of Art School. His work has been featured in the Huffington Post, Hawaii Public Radio, Lum Art Magazine, and the Santa Barbara Independent. Later, I found bioluminescent phytoplankton on the beach near my apartment and began incorporating phosphorescent acrylics into my paintings. Translucent by day, but activated at night, the pieces reveal a transparent overpainting of brush strokes, palette knife scrapes and representational forms.
